Why your hotel's own website should outsell the OTAs

Booking platforms take 15 to 25% of every reservation. A direct booking engine pays for itself faster than most owners expect, and here is the arithmetic.
Online travel agencies are very good at one thing: being found. That reach is worth paying for. What is rarely worth paying for is the second booking from a guest who already knows your name.
The arithmetic owners skip
Take a 20-room property averaging 180 TND a night at 65% occupancy. That is roughly 850,000 TND a year. If 40% of it comes through an OTA at a 18% commission, you are handing over about 61,000 TND annually.
A direct booking engine does not need to replace the OTAs. It needs to catch the guests who were coming back anyway.
Shifting even a quarter of those repeat reservations to your own site recovers more than the cost of building and running the site itself.
What actually moves the needle
- Rate parity, honestly applied. If your own site is more expensive, nothing else matters.
- Two-step checkout. Every extra field costs conversions.
- Real photography. Guests compare your rooms against a grid of competitors.
- Instant confirmation. "We will email you shortly" reads as a maybe.
Where most hotel sites lose the booking
Usually on mobile, somewhere between the date picker and the payment step. It is worth watching a real guest attempt a booking on a phone once. It is uncomfortable and it is the fastest audit available.
We built HoteLinkPro around exactly this: keep the OTAs for discovery, own the relationship afterwards.
